Rock climbing is an activity in which a person climbs up, down or traverses a vertical platform.
There are several types of rock climbing:
- Gym climbing
- Sports climbing
- Traditional climbing
- Bouldering
- Deep Water Soloing (DWS)
- Free Soloing
- Top rope climbing
- Ice climbing
- Via Ferrata

Typical Rock Climbing Gear Includes (but not limited to):
Each style requires its own set of gear and equipment. As gear is a wide topic, I will list the basic kit for starters.
All climbing styles except DWS, bouldering and free soloing require:
- Harnesses
- Safety sling
- Carabiners
- Ropes
- Security anchors (placements)
- First aid kit
- Lighter, 3m length of 1.5mm cord & emergency blanket
All styles require climbing shoes, chalk and helmet.

One of the greatest qualities of rock climbing is working with a partner. You have to trust your partner and they need to trust you, otherwise, you’ll put your partner and yourself at risk.
